This year all the creative parts of my card were done on Photoshop... no fun textures or doodads added. Which was honestly a little hard for me, but I really liked the final print, so I <em>guess</em> it's okay =)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I took a cool sky, some great water, a picture of me, a spyglass, and the old cast iron tub in the back yard (because cast iron tubs are really cool, and you can't just get rid of it!). </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Those shoes made me 6'2" tall! It was fun and really weird all at the same time. While it was fun for a bit, my toes were really happy when I took them off. Having my hair up in a 40's style victory rolls was the most fun for me in this year's card. If I become a hipster in the next year, I am definitely going to wear my hair like that every day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwkTEqgLZRj44DaQcBlhHehle4aAjGsYcyxf6uL6Q6x_Piz2Zp3muKURfYGSkwtMf0XomXKdN0eLBz1NLHmucOYy2GY1Z0kVgh3Y5sR3GD4LMcXch7mqhZ555-kSa0D37W2fupYF87O18/s1600/2014+composite+grid.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwkTEqgLZRj44DaQcBlhHehle4aAjGsYcyxf6uL6Q6x_Piz2Zp3muKURfYGSkwtMf0XomXKdN0eLBz1NLHmucOYy2GY1Z0kVgh3Y5sR3GD4LMcXch7mqhZ555-kSa0D37W2fupYF87O18/s1600/2014+composite+grid.jpg" height="640" width="522" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After I composited together all the elements of my photo, there was just a little more Photoshopping to do. I wanted the horizon to blend the water and sky together more, so I darkened it up. I decided the stripes on my top would work better red for a Christmas card. Of course I used a little handy cut and paste to exchange the paper roll I was holding with the spyglass =) And I did my best to make the water look like it was actually hitting the side of the <strike>boat</strike> tub (which I had highlighted the grudge).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnWai9JY2sBeULdEqQhdX3jPmHo_anXRCVuCCjkDKCnIs0LfavBbkJqsDg1TAVNBnozKcV7ytQoXS8Bta-TKkAKark6-n4YfWSiMNBhKTb8_hA11JHaTsiSz-oOgkGY2nozES1O8edcPs/s1600/2014+scripture+eph+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnWai9JY2sBeULdEqQhdX3jPmHo_anXRCVuCCjkDKCnIs0LfavBbkJqsDg1TAVNBnozKcV7ytQoXS8Bta-TKkAKark6-n4YfWSiMNBhKTb8_hA11JHaTsiSz-oOgkGY2nozES1O8edcPs/s1600/2014+scripture+eph+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnWai9JY2sBeULdEqQhdX3jPmHo_anXRCVuCCjkDKCnIs0LfavBbkJqsDg1TAVNBnozKcV7ytQoXS8Bta-TKkAKark6-n4YfWSiMNBhKTb8_hA11JHaTsiSz-oOgkGY2nozES1O8edcPs/s1600/2014+scripture+eph+3.jpg" height="640" width="459" /></a><br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then I went over to my favorite program, Illustrator, and created a graphic from scripture. It's usually rather hard for me to choose a scripture (there are of course so many!) This year's is one that I has been my scripture for the year and so I smiled when I realized it would work well for my card. (I put the scripture on its own if you would like to save it for yourself.)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I printed them through Zazzle.com with a fantastic deal I got. You should have seen me at 1am, as I was finalizing my order, and I realized that I got to put a full graphic on the back as well!!! I was super happy with the quality of the printing and the cards through them.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I truly hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!</div>

Here is a pattern for a bunny shaped finger puppet I made from two shades of felt. <br />
<br />
After you cut out the pieces from felt, start by attaching all the light color pieces onto the dark ones. I used a zigzag stitch around each to secure them. Being a seamstress, I prefer to sew things together than glue them, however you could glue on the light pieces to make this step easier.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVwiA7K5COlFzidsVJE52Bs5kZwJ3Pn2apP7JiTyTnJEvtr5dZbcAEYBEWkQ_jldRr2YQwcswy-VvMTDzjvpQtJ0Q1VmCeTuijiRRWxdzbt2oy7gvwXq3Nx1xzHEPjX-_RpZc7goz4-4o/s1600/bunny+1+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVwiA7K5COlFzidsVJE52Bs5kZwJ3Pn2apP7JiTyTnJEvtr5dZbcAEYBEWkQ_jldRr2YQwcswy-VvMTDzjvpQtJ0Q1VmCeTuijiRRWxdzbt2oy7gvwXq3Nx1xzHEPjX-_RpZc7goz4-4o/s1600/bunny+1+copy.jpg" height="258" width="320" /></a>Then again using a zigzag stitch, I attached the front and back body pieces (being sure to leave the bottom open). Then sewing the paws on top of the finished body. I would recommend sewing the body pieces together instead of gluing, but you could gluing the paws onto the body.<br />
<br />
When it comes to painting on the face, my trick for nice round eyes is to use the other side of the paint brush. Dab the end of the paint brush handle in the paint, place on the felt and gently twist. After painting on a nose and mouth, I add some of my very own blush, using a cotton swab.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcz10dIcNtgOCfd1oNAKARu9RveNfc1SdWmcNDNFEhyr5DjRuL95SeqfSZ-UiQyzncpE8h70GjA6pfUlx8fbW70qxrtk9chKDSniFbuT1hyphenhyphena5LqiyBVcNE8UBDQY1Hw-bDoXeQ6rt2-CU/s1600/bunny+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcz10dIcNtgOCfd1oNAKARu9RveNfc1SdWmcNDNFEhyr5DjRuL95SeqfSZ-UiQyzncpE8h70GjA6pfUlx8fbW70qxrtk9chKDSniFbuT1hyphenhyphena5LqiyBVcNE8UBDQY1Hw-bDoXeQ6rt2-CU/s1600/bunny+2.jpg" height="280" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And that's all there is! </div>

When I decided that I wanted to do a woodland theme Christmas card for 2013, in order to use the foam fir tree stickers I had been holding on to, I actually thought it would be an easy card. But as I pondered the design to encapsulate my theme, I snowballed myself into hours of creating artwork. Truly though, it was a labor of love.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
For me, this kind of artwork begins with paper and pencil. And well, my hand drawn style always ends up ready for the pages of a children's book. =)</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
After pencil, I retrace the designs in fine point marker, scan them into my computer, then use Illustrator to create vector outlines. I also use the program to color and shade the designs. Or another style I use is to just scan the smudgy pencil to create a texture, like I did for the green striped wallpaper background.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiwuV-93HmJe97pioFy1XgsggfgP-nHYSBtesQyPcTI0PAbuFjZBzWFOBTBmEwpzfGm4oOHSwrAYTOuGsusKEvcm7JCL0xNPC1J9ZBYx3gnUyxcOMyhfrtwg1b8RgsHm9uGXm4I5EG7Gw/s1600/04+green+back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiwuV-93HmJe97pioFy1XgsggfgP-nHYSBtesQyPcTI0PAbuFjZBzWFOBTBmEwpzfGm4oOHSwrAYTOuGsusKEvcm7JCL0xNPC1J9ZBYx3gnUyxcOMyhfrtwg1b8RgsHm9uGXm4I5EG7Gw/s1600/04+green+back.jpg" height="276" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcarE0ZbKbth1_xhWmQsHIcRdbLyL1uh9ENUKy4dkLvZJI2uD1axyCw9yYmU0rtB_mixg-dkaxqwFY_WwPFFJIKEv90PLyFKdQuVyj2ZWzIT7_rOHlLHTmQI4IPDpjd3xMcWOIXkp97Ms/s1600/05+vector+layer-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcarE0ZbKbth1_xhWmQsHIcRdbLyL1uh9ENUKy4dkLvZJI2uD1axyCw9yYmU0rtB_mixg-dkaxqwFY_WwPFFJIKEv90PLyFKdQuVyj2ZWzIT7_rOHlLHTmQI4IPDpjd3xMcWOIXkp97Ms/s1600/05+vector+layer-.jpg" height="270" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once the Illustrator elements were put together, I pulled them into Photoshop. Photoshop allowed me to easily create colored textures for the frames, pull in photo images of fabrics for portrait backgrounds, and to add my picture as the final portrait. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
At this point, now that all the artwork and images were together, I could print as many as I wanted! I used Costco's photo holiday card printing service. But I couldn't just leave it without a little texture, and as was the plan all along (remembering those tree stickers!) I added googly eyes to the owl (luckily they were stickers too), a balsa wood bird, and the fir tree sticker to my hand - which looked odd in my photo shoot to be holding an imaginary object.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Begin with cutting strips of felt 2 inches wide. Cutting these strips at an angle, you end up making diamond shape pieces. Every two pieces will give you about 3.25 inches of length toward your garland. Cut strips of fabric 1" by 5" and ribbon also in 5" lengths.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Place diamonds in pairs, to sew together length-wise. Sewing up to the last .25" of the diamond tip, overlap the next set of diamonds and keep sewing pairs together until you have reached your desired length. Take the strips of fabric and ribbon and tie them between each diamond set.</div>

For my 2012 Christmas card I made myself an old fashion styled circus high-wire outfit. Then with the magic of Photoshop I added a backdrop to make it look like I was off the ground. After I printed out the image I strung through the print, going under my feet, a "high wire" string for a fun 3D effect. Washi and glitter tapes made for an easy way to add design elements to my card.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
In graphic design I work with fonts a lot. Font styles are incredibly useful and can even say more than the actual words. There are quite a few handwriting fonts out right now and I thought it would be fun to have one too. It was back in middle school that I began paying attention to and changing up my handwriting. Mostly because I admired my friend Christie's handwriting so much, and also because I'm such a visual and artsy girl. So my font is very much "me" but now in quick type form. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is named <em>Wiggins Writing </em>because I am known as Wiggins to several groups of friends and that named seemed fitting for my style of writing. The program I used was a free one, so there are a few issues with kerning (space proportions between letters) but I still wanted to share. Here are links to download the font for you to use too. I trust that you won't be writing any ransom notes with it :)</div>

<span style="font-family: Helvetica; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Times New Roman';">My sister has been familiar with a camera for a long time, mostly because she is completely photogenic and has always enjoyed having her picture taken. This eventually led to her being captivated with the other side of the camera as well and now she enjoys being the photographer. I especially adore her outdoor photography with clients (or with her adorable kids!). She has the skill for outdoor lighting, and more importantly, she has an eye for balance. Last year as her photography business was beginning to grow, I asked if I could design a custom watermark graphic for her pictures. It serves as both copyright and promotion. (At the time her business name was simply typed on the side of the image.) Now she can mark her photos with a fun, logo-type design element that can help promote her contemporary style. <span style="font-family: inherit;">In April, a close friend emailed me that she was on her 5th grade son's (also a close friend of mine) grad party committee. She asked if I would help with a t-shirt design. There was just no way I could say "no" to that. T-shirt designs are a fun project for me... probably because it's clothing and graphics combined! Plus working on youthful graphics always makes me feel young.</span></div>

Luckily, they ended up using the colored ones for some posters and then I converted the design into two-color for the t-shirts. All the 5th graders got their own, each with the full list of their names. The school did a great job of decorating for the event and it sounded like a really fun time. <span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">With Spring becoming Summer, and being inspired by a new friend’s <a href="http://designbylulu.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">cute blog</a>, it was well past time to change out my black patterned background. Many of my color preferences tend to change with the seasons of the year, except for green… I always love some shade of green. I also often like a touch of texture. So with that, and my current adoration for simple repeating, trellis-like patterns, I made an image to seamlessly tile the blog background.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">It is recommended that if you are going to put your own background on your blog, to keep the files size as small as possible so not to slow down the loading of your page. Repeating/tiling a small image is one of the best ways to achieve this.</span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You are welcome to grab a tile for your background too! I made a few different color options. <br /><span style="font-size: xx-small;">(You may use a tile for personal use, but you may not sell or redistribute)</span> </span> </div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><span style="mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-size: small;">How to make a tile:</span> </span></span>To make the tile I first created a seamless background texture, then a repeating trellis pattern, and blended them together. Here is a general explanation of how to make a seamless background texture.</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Using Photoshop I first created a texture that I liked. Unfortunately it would take longer to walk through that process. There are however many tutorials online or even free textures you can download. Basically, I kept layering several texture images and applied an image blend to each new layer (Image > Apply Image). </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Although I want my final image to be rather small, I keep it large enough to work with, 300 x 360 pixels in this example. To make the texture seamlessly repeat, choose Filter > Other > Offset. The Offset needs to be set to be half the size of your image – in this case 150 x 180 pixels. My image now looks like image <strong>a</strong>.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhisP1K5g5X_eGPxnYKpoY15ILWZh4bLOo4MK1p3G8UAwWSQaUGCaAMwktc-jQVTiOjvMjYEjPvcZcE0oHXcraichdLj757kN7xIt9NSNsBsnJpomWBwt0_KYSfvKkpmSjmqE5BQahioUg/s1600/background+texture+offset+blend.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Using the Clone Stamp Tool I blended out the seam lines, <strong>b</strong>.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Just to make sure it’s now seamless, I Offset the image again, <strong>c</strong>. </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">You now have a seamless texture that can tile. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjz6qZ4bhDQx6qommOvtO_2E4U7OWx2W0koITThD5kIueP0rBOvzjjTKCTRAmuRiFWT6xhKcZuqj1CY0Pp2eQSSGfuiAnJdloGrtOAJeWPomEGivrccAPauPWx5gCsAUheNkEg_p18zXDE/s1600/background+texture+offset+blend+reoffset.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">After I applied my repeating trellis pattern to the texture, I resized the image to a mere 100 x 120, for a nice and small 31k file.</span></div>

I was visiting some close friends in December when, after watching Elf, I thought it would be fun to cut paper snowflakes with the kids. I couldn't remember the last time I had tried but did remember that they never quite turned out like I hoped... until now! They were so fun and easy that they became the inspiration for my <a href="http://augustavenue.blogspot.com/2012/01/merry-christmas-and-happy-new-year.html">Christmas card</a> this year. </div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
There are two major steps to making paper snowflakes: folding and cutting.</div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;">F O L D I N G</span></div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
This is how I fold my paper into 12 parts giving it a hexagonal shape when you’re done.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="176" rea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA57wy8eBKlalLM8bEHCYEbUDnl8pJbpGGtNxQ4ley98Cz-sSk7L6xPenL0YYIdxDqbD_WQAMPj8zns6J6FtM9X7Mbk0FkFCxFBkFpxzjglBjSlX3Zq_GcUgNljwnCywOFMtw5ncDK4Co/s640/snowflakes1.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
Start by folding one corner and edge up to the adjacent edge creating a triangle(1). Crease the fold to mark the center (1). Fold the triangle into thirds with the point at that center. I eye-ball it and adjust it until it is just right – a 30 degree angle (2). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="176" rea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbO0nvqJ_KSGaz_BOV-kTG4lXqydJVeL2fFkCl1JBjgj-vfWPIcvQmOJQetmqij4DbXTQk84GqkEro8JrubovE2VyzS-JTU09PyhZWcnWw3veGU8f_h6-Nlv_jxCdP-Yj9yIstqitwDiU/s640/snowflakes3-4.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
The folds are just right when I fold the other side in and it matches the same size triangle created (3). (This is where I remind you that math really is cool and helpful in everyday life =). Once I FIND THIS ANGLE I STOP and use this paper as a template to fold the rest of my papers. My papers all now look like photo #4.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="224" rea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDen7vXZZ9pCr7zWRNLTEs0CwFhNBCNQfqOlbOOofyaqlDTWr2B1O7JTxw0bTqoJFvgiOnN7HyXkzkzc5AaI5Dz3-pDdSDNeLJ6io-RXD3N1XFDKB5UTCH_SNz0jnrMDV2P5w_KzvxGjQ/s640/snowflakes5.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
I then take each of the three triangles that were created and fold them in half (5-9). Taking the left side I fold it back inward then take the edge back to the left until it is aligned with the fold – and crease it (5). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha1D498RbTj_FIAfGydp5LmKvxvRCbzaMPIh9zAEPt4bV_Ba31CIPR9KhpJlK3teo2orBwOVsEImfU6oUMCkPfJEZiH3PHre6oaTg3LJiUpP3-33UO0yQasjlUXrhNoMwfmlDuqGBPEpc/s1600/snowflakes6-7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" rea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEha1D498RbTj_FIAfGydp5LmKvxvRCbzaMPIh9zAEPt4bV_Ba31CIPR9KhpJlK3teo2orBwOVsEImfU6oUMCkPfJEZiH3PHre6oaTg3LJiUpP3-33UO0yQasjlUXrhNoMwfmlDuqGBPEpc/s640/snowflakes6-7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
I do this for the right side as well (6). If I open those folds back, you can see the new folds (7). <br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUVGi6lygd-nUQQaf1E4y-VYktdw4zWzPTGyPJVYvfEqeH2hbMZPE6HY7hY0T146eJDvsghdqUucM26IRRev6TmS-6F4LASNdDFDxfryy0_n_s398T8HDtGzuPg8i7B1biWD45FMSKbz8/s1600/snowflakes8-9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="224" rea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUVGi6lygd-nUQQaf1E4y-VYktdw4zWzPTGyPJVYvfEqeH2hbMZPE6HY7hY0T146eJDvsghdqUucM26IRRev6TmS-6F4LASNdDFDxfryy0_n_s398T8HDtGzuPg8i7B1biWD45FMSKbz8/s640/snowflakes8-9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
Just need to finish off by creasing the center triangle by folding the paper backwards (8). Now you have an accordion style fold (9). </div>

<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
I happen to always cut the center because it will unfold and lay flat better when done. From there I cut one or two shapes on one side of the fold then flip it over and cut one to three shapes on the other side. Sometimes cut all the way over, getting close to the other edge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div align="center" style="text-align: center;">
The key is SIMPLE SHAPES. Almost every shape is only 2 or 3 cuts to make it! I CUT AWAY a lot of the paper, thinking more about the white part that I’m leaving then the shape I’m cutting out. I often have several shapes end near a similar spot. And remember to cut a chunk OFF THE TOP EDGE.</div>

Even just really simple triangle cuts back and forth makes for a cool snowflake. Or experiment with adding curved cuts. Enjoy!</div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">Fourteen years ago I started my production of a homemade Christmas card. It started when I was a poor college student living in a house with about 60 other people. I wished I could give everyone in the house a little gift, and if I made them smile for even just a moment knowing they got a handmade Christmas card, then that was a nice gift.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">My Christmas card list only grew through the years. I love thinking about what card I will make for everyone each year, to remind people that I care about them, and to continually share the Gospel by writing about my life in Christ. I am very thankful and even blessed that I get to share my heart and creativities in this way each year.</span></div>

This year I made a pattern for a retro-inspired, sweetheart neckline, strapless dress. I made a few in my size so that I could show their fit (and so I could have one for myself =). Then I offered them as a custom made dress in the customer's size and fabric request. </span></span></span></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><br />

One of my best friends, Erin, is rather clever when it come to gifts. Her husband's birthday was approaching and so she asked me if I could help with this great idea she had for him. He has been making homebrew beer for several years and really honing in on some good brew. I don’t happen to drink beer but I can appreciate the craftsmanship that they have put into it. So when she asked if I could create a label design for the bottles, I thought it was great!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What I loved even more was that his style is modern (think MadMen) and so I got to create several modern style ideas for her to choose from. From there we had the chosen design printed on labels with the ability to be written on. Now Adam Watson has his very own beer labels that he can write the specific brew on along with the date. That’s a pretty fun guy-gift. </div>

I’ve realized through the years though, that the best embellishments I buy I have a harder time using – once I use it, I won’t get to use it again. That is why I like buying punches and other gadgets that let me make multiples of anything I decide to make… I can almost always make more. I have a drawer full of colorful scrap pattern papers that come in extra handy for my punches. Several months ago I decided to see if I could put together a cupcake design with the materials I had on had. Here is what I came up with.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqtOVkEAYsV5IUUu-QCB68nbOCE8EzUvybHCVftNlSK1po5rD3HZMnV8bj86t-kLX4v9ToE_ocear3j05rYqDSnh11TKmhjRw29SJSOMShPUe1QDon9Lu-F-cLZYF1004UHSe2MDTiUQE/s1600/cupcake1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" j8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqtOVkEAYsV5IUUu-QCB68nbOCE8EzUvybHCVftNlSK1po5rD3HZMnV8bj86t-kLX4v9ToE_ocear3j05rYqDSnh11TKmhjRw29SJSOMShPUe1QDon9Lu-F-cLZYF1004UHSe2MDTiUQE/s640/cupcake1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I began with my paper crimper (which is actually a toothpaste crimper that I use on paper =). I knew this would help simulate the cupcake liner. I cut it into an angled rectangle (trapezoid) to fit the size of the cupcake top which I made from a scallop circle punch. </div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZhEdGZrp7aT1pbh0RmswF-JuCZaPuA4DB2QJCmp4B2E9d997pOcVGmXXdmVKZsUtxCRh8-qPlSCDf22RqCE9LfYWt0yz_lTY_IjIP-fxlP8iodbkoCMIv6pEAirkiu7SGY7N8z1VjsY/s1600/cupcake2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" j8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZhEdGZrp7aT1pbh0RmswF-JuCZaPuA4DB2QJCmp4B2E9d997pOcVGmXXdmVKZsUtxCRh8-qPlSCDf22RqCE9LfYWt0yz_lTY_IjIP-fxlP8iodbkoCMIv6pEAirkiu7SGY7N8z1VjsY/s640/cupcake2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>My “cherry on top” is from a small circle punch and heart punch. A simple and cute design that I can make over and over with different papers and color combinations.<br />

Really, the most creative commitment that you have to make is which color to drop the egg into. A bowl full of simply solid colored eggs are super cute and festive. Beyond the basic color, there are many decoration kits, methods and ideas to keep the creativity flowing. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMyVLX5s2neiBOP2IMV0IhjbVWmzcUvqT6F37vT0rw45G3AAos42lWbrn61dihhHNx0biac-1C3oI_fUS7xwrMFOPNCywGmhVsyvsnaZaOs_wYvB7xX0gjVnYqY4_mBloKGFCyqtjOU08/s1600/eggs+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMyVLX5s2neiBOP2IMV0IhjbVWmzcUvqT6F37vT0rw45G3AAos42lWbrn61dihhHNx0biac-1C3oI_fUS7xwrMFOPNCywGmhVsyvsnaZaOs_wYvB7xX0gjVnYqY4_mBloKGFCyqtjOU08/s640/eggs+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I have long preferred to color hollowed-out eggs. That way I can let them sit out on the table since they won't need to be refrigerated. To hollow an egg, create small holes on the top and bottom of an egg, stir up the insides with a toothpick and then blow the yolks and whites into a bowl. (The egg insides become especially handy to make cookies after decorating is done! )</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfsjybqmUuJ59hCUoXcSkq0P6CA_5v3ycYiDa-2ixhFrCvUQsqpYLj77QuRqa6bwkVw4IjrCaktFC34XTImmpRTgyveTnbua1DfLbup4cCPJVZ8-R-BQGqIY3K0pN37Z3_b1d4eIJs4fE/s1600/eggs+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfsjybqmUuJ59hCUoXcSkq0P6CA_5v3ycYiDa-2ixhFrCvUQsqpYLj77QuRqa6bwkVw4IjrCaktFC34XTImmpRTgyveTnbua1DfLbup4cCPJVZ8-R-BQGqIY3K0pN37Z3_b1d4eIJs4fE/s640/eggs+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">My favorite decoration tool is a bottle of clear fingernail polish. Paint on the polish any place you want the current color to stay before placing the egg in a new color. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV8gmxqe3CSp2F2HIsjiV7audb7jammAh8okSHVHbou5qmMTLmfSFXL1mAEuUCmXlgCyU7G0abrqSZloUH9FESmzHLipcdJRFg3hsxUQamourH186lgtjZNqYFvI_arOC0QMK9FUEY210/s1600/eggs+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" i8="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgV8gmxqe3CSp2F2HIsjiV7audb7jammAh8okSHVHbou5qmMTLmfSFXL1mAEuUCmXlgCyU7G0abrqSZloUH9FESmzHLipcdJRFg3hsxUQamourH186lgtjZNqYFvI_arOC0QMK9FUEY210/s400/eggs+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">I actually really enjoy simple colored eggs the best and so my favorite egg ended up being the one I used the polish to leave a large heart shape on the egg. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">Perhaps what I like most about Easter egg decorating is that I don't feel the need for my finished eggs to look really well done. Instead they speak more of the fun that was had in the creative process... and, well, they look really cute all in a bowl.</div>Andriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10192746862014952541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3226064001761741242.post-32109268531661952972011-03-12T11:52:00.000-08:002012-01-05T09:23:11.292-08:00Hero of Hems<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">I shorten quite a few pant and jean hems on a weekly basis. Most pants are sewed with a blind hem and chinos with a top stitch. Dark jeans without a wash on them are trimmed and top stitched with denim thread. But most jeans have a wash on them. It’s a process which leaves a light coloring on the hem that we are all familiar with. Unfortunately it is not easily duplicated at home and can be distinctly missing when jeans are shortened. After several washes the new hem can show signs of the similar lightening, but the best way to keep the original look is to keep the original hem. While saving hems is a common occurrence for me, trying to explain how that works and looks to someone who has never had their hems saved, can be hard to relate. Here are some pictures I took of the major steps in the process. </div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN6cMQDquMN8EOrEKU45nwgEqErvfO5lEnSh7_TO0e3G7W5nWx4kVf3u8kOHg_aNBVKXfxVLRE0VEdQQ37SkfVz6kRrpb0zIQAzpJkjiBdJyhx4nsEdQ_59paFDF9U9QxhsKUHyYuyfrs/s1600/hem+saved1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="249" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhN6cMQDquMN8EOrEKU45nwgEqErvfO5lEnSh7_TO0e3G7W5nWx4kVf3u8kOHg_aNBVKXfxVLRE0VEdQQ37SkfVz6kRrpb0zIQAzpJkjiBdJyhx4nsEdQ_59paFDF9U9QxhsKUHyYuyfrs/s640/hem+saved1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">The hem is cut off and the extra length of denim removed. The two new edges are separately sewed with a serger to secure the threads. They are then pinned together with side seams matching up.</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQpnBdhZ-Zhiv6-Eh2hCzu0xacN_q_Ehht5SQ0tuY0LGFkjqsG0zTRc8MvBb-KV9hjjCIxzJ2WL8eK-bJwelgvMumS9QksE_UW7Kgf6KoyC7qUdue-zvjGcB6gUnYWOJqKz20Hd9DeFDg/s1600/hem+saved2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQpnBdhZ-Zhiv6-Eh2hCzu0xacN_q_Ehht5SQ0tuY0LGFkjqsG0zTRc8MvBb-KV9hjjCIxzJ2WL8eK-bJwelgvMumS9QksE_UW7Kgf6KoyC7qUdue-zvjGcB6gUnYWOJqKz20Hd9DeFDg/s640/hem+saved2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">The zipper foot allows the stitches to get as close to the hem fold as possible. After the hem is reattached, a top stitch with matching thread keeps the new seam flat and the denim edges under the seam secured down. The result is a seam can be seen when looking closely but integrates itself and is barely noticeable from a distance. As you can see in the final picture, the hem blends back into the pant leg nicely.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdsM-0HYOF8tDHUtGKiBwn6A-AHEBD1_gYcR0_YIcJz91bhitB73acCBtCo3X1j5Ffan2yroz8PyeOFY7IElWdbUuCCO9SxhKAl8sLmTgyggAIKLiebTkpYVKIzSNn4fvlcTl-ZR4n1a8/s1600/hem+saved3-.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhdsM-0HYOF8tDHUtGKiBwn6A-AHEBD1_gYcR0_YIcJz91bhitB73acCBtCo3X1j5Ffan2yroz8PyeOFY7IElWdbUuCCO9SxhKAl8sLmTgyggAIKLiebTkpYVKIzSNn4fvlcTl-ZR4n1a8/s1600/hem+saved3-.jpg" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;"><br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
While there are a variety of products and services I endeavor in each month, most fall into one of three general categories: invitations, graphic design or sewing. This post is a combination of two categories. It's what happened last month when I took my list of little phrases in my graphic design files and give a face-lift to <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/AndriaHigginsDesigns?section_id=6000463">my save-the-date magnets</a>. </div>

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo3Q4QJyeRciS_7MxPrifMKHP_ar5-aeB05lTfsK6uvWbVdhz8JVhp8GZc7dtKW50Q9SWqJk7ykGKoJicz78RMK4-Mf5XUYworBiMISPvNSND-qokx_pb8a33lV-d5sJ3kzyanxXHUbdc/s1600/save+date+-+paper+styles.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" q6="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo3Q4QJyeRciS_7MxPrifMKHP_ar5-aeB05lTfsK6uvWbVdhz8JVhp8GZc7dtKW50Q9SWqJk7ykGKoJicz78RMK4-Mf5XUYworBiMISPvNSND-qokx_pb8a33lV-d5sJ3kzyanxXHUbdc/s400/save+date+-+paper+styles.jpg" width="400" /></a>I've been offering save-the-date magnets for as long as I've been making invitations. They incorporate pattern papers and ribbon to nicely coordinate with the invite. They are sweet but I really wanted to offer something a little more modern too.</div>
</div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">
Long before I made invitations I began collecting a variety of little phrases that I've been using on cards and magnets. Some are known slang, quotes, phrases, song snip-its or other pop-culture reference. Others, usually my favorite, are a mash-up of words from the list or completely random word combinations. For <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/AndriaHigginsDesigns?section_id=6000463">my new save-the-dates</a> I grabbed a couple phrases to combine and then enjoyed a little graphic design. Voila.</div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">For a girl like me, who is single, people are often strangely confused that Valentines Day would be my favorite holiday. Sure I didn’t always feel this way. There were the anxiety-filled days of elementary school when I would fearfully hope I got valentine cards. But experiencing that feeling confronted me with a choice (that took a little while to learn) to either feel sad and hurt or to help others not feel that way. If we all sit around wanting to be given love, then who is doing the giving? Well, honesty, God is. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">God loves us so much that He sent Jesus to Earth (Christmas). Jesus loves us so much that He died for our sin (Easter). And yet life is more than just me and God. He put us here with each other... where we get to learn to love and be loved... to give grace and receive it. Valentines Day not only reminds me of God's love and the people in my life who love me, but that I too have the choice and ability to spread the love. I love it! </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt; text-align: justify;">

Which I feel like is all wrapped up in giving a handmade card.</span></span></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-language: EN-US;"></span><br />

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">A few years ago a local art supply store had a Valentines Day cards contest. I made one with as many different techniques as I could fit on it. A stitched fabric heart painted pink and stamped with white screening ink; Red tissue paper printed with “love” in a variety of fonts then crinkled up and lacquered to cardstock; l-o-v-e letters embossed onto clay circles and painted; bronze embossing powdered hearts and paper edges; are a few of the techniques and materials I used.</span></div>

In the fall I was invited to sell jewelry at a Gal's Night Out gathering. I hadn't made jewelry in quite some time nor had I ever really spent much creative time on it when I was making it. So I took the opportunity to explore some creativeness in making necklaces. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">It was a lot of trial and error... beading and taking apart and starting over and sometimes taking apart again! Among the styles I tried my hand at some multiple strand twists but what I discovered was when I just simply braided them together around the necklace chain, I found a wonderful combination of balance, asymmetry and personality.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">So this winter, with a drawer still full of beads, I began making my new favorite necklaces. I can't wait for warmer weather when I can wear my own with a tank top and capris or my favorite black linen dress.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I was able to make these available for purchase at my <a href="http://www.andriahigginsdesigns.etsy.com/">Etsy Boutique</a> and soon I had a bride special order some beautiful champagne shade necklaces for her bridesmaids. It never stops feeling sweet to contribute to the festivities of a wedding!</div>Andriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10192746862014952541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3226064001761741242.post-83327532414707077322011-01-17T14:13:00.000-08:002012-01-05T09:23:11.331-08:00How to make fabric flower hair clips<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6FUdXYukxTNWPePFBvKY9KQ7VosDo-t8FgRHUGB7KMp2KJBIk6W78dnz3iT4VnWdulfPXn1d3fusGeQnAGrHrUJHbeNymDWQmUWC51C0qbIitf2FGRaJa2F5RU6PWFZTZUqUTt0hc3qU/s1600/Hair+flower+title.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="340" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6FUdXYukxTNWPePFBvKY9KQ7VosDo-t8FgRHUGB7KMp2KJBIk6W78dnz3iT4VnWdulfPXn1d3fusGeQnAGrHrUJHbeNymDWQmUWC51C0qbIitf2FGRaJa2F5RU6PWFZTZUqUTt0hc3qU/s640/Hair+flower+title.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>As a Christmas gift I made a few fabric flower hair clips. There are several variations of these found in the how-to nation of the internet. I made mine slightly different than the ones I looked at, mostly because I use needle and thread in my life more often than glue. My sister asked how I made the one I sent my niece, pictured in the title image. So here is my how-to.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIEwZ60MJQ7c6HtEywq2OLSnkgmL07Zhj3avlEMrZSqXUwXGWakelI33GP-k8jR14CUlMEULM49qR_7LSYVPHuBZWQcB_J4vay4XLycNS_870OKZ9Z8kt38MPzxzM02xIhluS01JgVkxo/s1600/hair+flower-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIEwZ60MJQ7c6HtEywq2OLSnkgmL07Zhj3avlEMrZSqXUwXGWakelI33GP-k8jR14CUlMEULM49qR_7LSYVPHuBZWQcB_J4vay4XLycNS_870OKZ9Z8kt38MPzxzM02xIhluS01JgVkxo/s640/hair+flower-1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>ONE - Cut a fairly long strip of fabric, at least 36" long and about 2" wide. If you are going to make a multi-color flower, then the total length of each fabric you will use should add up to at least 36". At this length, your finished clip will be about 2" in diameter. My neice's measured closer to 2.5" which took at least 50" of fabric.<br />
<br />
TWO - Fold the edges in towards the center and iron. <br />
<br />
THREE - Now fold the strip in half (but DON'T iron this fold) and tie a knot on one end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin6n6GrUF6rhVp2XQpc7F8J-cMI5diAwd04QMCmv1ETWtY_yIjROdGlf7CZrAVU8Jtj-Z6SksxTkPkMCMBiO1Yt_DNEgfdtMRXjWCU3nm0jwbpEQfwnw5Le9GFMhNJsQveJCJqNKetdV0/s1600/hair+flower-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin6n6GrUF6rhVp2XQpc7F8J-cMI5diAwd04QMCmv1ETWtY_yIjROdGlf7CZrAVU8Jtj-Z6SksxTkPkMCMBiO1Yt_DNEgfdtMRXjWCU3nm0jwbpEQfwnw5Le9GFMhNJsQveJCJqNKetdV0/s640/hair+flower-2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>FOUR - Hold the knot securely in one hand while holding the length on fabric in the other. Begin to twist the length of fabric closest to the knot.<br />
<br />
FIVE - Begin to wrap the fabric around the knot as you continue to twist the length of fabric. Both the twisting and the wrapping should be fairly loose. The bulk of the knot stays to the backside of the layers.<br />
<br />
SIX - Since the wrapping around is loose, secure the layers together with pins as you go.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie2cK__EGuSMJQuUVld_Vo13fUEdQV6p-0ueTcpzkj1o70mEq5e7eMchUadDoeyTt47Ua2gbwmq7YK3NcmDSrtuHsqeIdKNX0-XrgGGFupqbsOu8LG5pFogs9SUvaBrNaJCB_ricg3eb8/s1600/hair+flower-3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie2cK__EGuSMJQuUVld_Vo13fUEdQV6p-0ueTcpzkj1o70mEq5e7eMchUadDoeyTt47Ua2gbwmq7YK3NcmDSrtuHsqeIdKNX0-XrgGGFupqbsOu8LG5pFogs9SUvaBrNaJCB_ricg3eb8/s640/hair+flower-3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>SEVEN - The length of fabric is done being twisted and pinned OR add on a new strip of fabric by simply leaving the raw edge behind the layers and continuing the twisting and pinning. Note that your finished flower clip will be smaller than the fabric circle is at this point in the process. So if it looks too small, it is only going to get smaller, you might want to add more layers.<br />
<br />
EIGHT - (Backside pictured) Tuck the end of the fabric behind the layers and secure by sewing a simple knot between it and the beginning knot. If you used several fabric strips, quickly stitch all the ends together in the center.<br />
<br />
NINE - Starting from the center knot, create a long stitch through all the outer layers. Look at the front of the flower as you go to make sure the thread is not going on top of the layers, but through each layer. Pull the thread tight and then make a long stitch back to the center knot. Continue doing this as you turn the circle, all the way around. Pulling tight on the thread will bunch up the layers of fabric and create more of a flower/petal texture. Once you stitched all the way around, tie off the thread back at the center.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9MPlXKJgVHoyr9IhMJN5KTkpxH9FtwqJDlO9dHED5icXT3NB5L-Fk_-5X8E2YOexbXbrPLcYFV0gvnRJ6F1ZDz6jvC9E8WxD8_LW2y7K4g5UDOvwPzFq35Q_IeEZGjxnWNv7ilqK4k4I/s1600/hair+flower-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9MPlXKJgVHoyr9IhMJN5KTkpxH9FtwqJDlO9dHED5icXT3NB5L-Fk_-5X8E2YOexbXbrPLcYFV0gvnRJ6F1ZDz6jvC9E8WxD8_LW2y7K4g5UDOvwPzFq35Q_IeEZGjxnWNv7ilqK4k4I/s640/hair+flower-4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>TEN - Cut either felt or crafters' leather (since neither will fray) into a circle that is slightly smaller than your finished fabric flower. Choose the clip that you are going to secure to the fabric being sure that it is smaller than your flower (should I have mentioned this sooner?). I purchased a pack of clips at the craft supply store in the jewelry section that are just 1.75" long.<br />
<br />
<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwgzF7LkBFwQNKEetLalQQLfDm6FkchyphenhyphenblWl4bHsC7-t4InuhuTcOgl0YfgJOQAGExeyqrUqU5mSkKUso_2bP-ym10jPd8TjXgnxC_2_AcTbzLwNO4FzFkcaomNZEQxs9cjUWs1umMncw/s1600/Hair+flower5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwgzF7LkBFwQNKEetLalQQLfDm6FkchyphenhyphenblWl4bHsC7-t4InuhuTcOgl0YfgJOQAGExeyqrUqU5mSkKUso_2bP-ym10jPd8TjXgnxC_2_AcTbzLwNO4FzFkcaomNZEQxs9cjUWs1umMncw/s320/Hair+flower5.jpg" width="320" /></a>ELEVEN - Secure the clip to the circle with just a few stitches. Be sure to leave the thread knots on the backside of the circle.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">TWELVE - Apply a good amount of glue to the backside of the circle and press onto the backside of the fabric flower. Let dry... and you're done.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

This also means I am making things I've never made before nor ever imagined I would be making. The one that stuck out this Christmas was the Angry Bird stuffed animals I made for two [super fun] young boys I know. I designed them from a popular little computer game of the same name. I thought they turned out cute even though they are meant to be "angry."Andriahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10192746862014952541noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3226064001761741242.post-36679943998361210452010-12-27T13:14:00.000-08:002013-11-14T09:31:51.624-08:00Math and MaryAnne<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have a dressform I've named MarryAnne. She is most often used as my coat and scarf rack but when it comes to making patterns, she is very helpful.</div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPQu0lhTb5xa1utxb0iH_3j2N0dBojEuZKztRX8AV6PWBERsRU4ZC_mGmjFtuD_t9LrzD9DDmK9Gp8efKWLW_uVIx0EwEUVllUj7AATaQn3BN6oKObtFeUWO_hOC-10rJywMTYbHYqudQ/s1600/Jacket+pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="293" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPQu0lhTb5xa1utxb0iH_3j2N0dBojEuZKztRX8AV6PWBERsRU4ZC_mGmjFtuD_t9LrzD9DDmK9Gp8efKWLW_uVIx0EwEUVllUj7AATaQn3BN6oKObtFeUWO_hOC-10rJywMTYbHYqudQ/s400/Jacket+pattern.jpg" width="400" /></a>There are two common forms of making a garment pattern: </div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
Flat -- you start with a beginning basic pattern, work on a flat surface and use varied tools along with math. </div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
Draping -- you use a dressform to shape a pattern with large sheets of pattern paper (I use tissue paper), pins and scissors. </div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
Since I have so much regard for math but also enjoy working three-dimensionally, I make patterns using both pattern-making forms... "Math and MarryAnne"</div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="border: currentColor; clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkXrydwAz8mMQnTFwpxvp09GYrmV_KMMTm2jF62PNz930hG6CQcIGZI5dl09Te9aovL5VdywyCZP3Vgcar16pn9k5ijgeUDS0fvgymhKuDEJmZTyQFOeX64OCRupCQ2-PLQLwumCjXO4E/s1600/jacket+done.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhkXrydwAz8mMQnTFwpxvp09GYrmV_KMMTm2jF62PNz930hG6CQcIGZI5dl09Te9aovL5VdywyCZP3Vgcar16pn9k5ijgeUDS0fvgymhKuDEJmZTyQFOeX64OCRupCQ2-PLQLwumCjXO4E/s400/jacket+done.jpg" width="275" /></a></div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
For my Christmas card picture this year I wanted to make a jacket. This gave me the chance to take a few pictures of the pattern process. </div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
I didn't have the time to fully produce my pattern with lining and so I made a jacket out of wool felt. When you buy a wool blended felt and then wash it in hot water, it creates a fun marbled texture. (If you plan to wash your garments after you make it, it is very important to wash the fabric before you cut the pattern pieces =) Felt fabrics don't fray, thus leaving cuts crisp and no need to secure with sewing. That also allowed me to creatively put several seams facing outward. Luckily for me, wool felt is warm since it was 34 degrees out when we took my pictures!</div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
I'm saving the Christmas card picture for a later post =).</div>

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">ONE - The most creative way to gather words for phrases is to cut up a magazine. I find though that it takes quite a bit of time to do this, so I print them out in fun fonts. However it is very important that if you print on an ink jet printer, you must copy the words off on a copier (or the words will bleed once glue is applied). Cut out the words and glue them onto small pieces of colorful paper or magazine clippings. Just make sure the pieces of paper are slightly bigger than the glass you will be using. Don't worry about being sloppy with the glue.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;"></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX9aKlteJjmC_y7qvaLYxEsT9GrLFMNPiK4S6mVzpD3DcJcX-JrKKXZ6vBSEAVMA_zltubVbHuJuwA-cpBfzQkus_iKnKgr-ubfaRkKYiLBcLL1DkAhKKPoV9ni62P1QPRmaam61NR-yw/s1600/GlassMagnets2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX9aKlteJjmC_y7qvaLYxEsT9GrLFMNPiK4S6mVzpD3DcJcX-JrKKXZ6vBSEAVMA_zltubVbHuJuwA-cpBfzQkus_iKnKgr-ubfaRkKYiLBcLL1DkAhKKPoV9ni62P1QPRmaam61NR-yw/s400/GlassMagnets2.jpg" width="400" /></a>TWO - I use large floral glass marbles which are shaped like a disc (not a sphere). There is one side of the glass that is smoother than the other. On the less smooth side, apply a generous amount of crafters glue. I like this glue because it is thicker than average glue. Spread the glue to the edges with your finger.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">THREE - Place the glue side down on the piece of paper over words. Glently press down to get out air bubbles. It is okay if glue squeezes out the sides. Be sure that you are on a flat surface or the glass will begin to slide off the paper. Wait 5-10 minutes and double check for any more air bubbles. If there are any, pick it up and try to press them out to the sides by pressing on the paper side. This is also a time to double check the placement of, or make any adjustments to the glass. Then turn all the pieces up-side down so that the glass is down. This will allow the glue to dry through the paper. At this point it will take a while for the glue to dry. I let them dry over night.</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: justify;"></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6SnFrSKjB21nRk4v2k-Mj8tBe9l7WmnlK4-9OsG4CHOeowaQYF5VAGHJ__ygbE5GK0ZBe1olp7drsCqEFPwOr1DCCsXxRh5SfQj6Edd47HvSZlV9SxmboBOuS14sthq9xtW4LsErqBhw/s1600/GlassMagnets3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="288" n4="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6SnFrSKjB21nRk4v2k-Mj8tBe9l7WmnlK4-9OsG4CHOeowaQYF5VAGHJ__ygbE5GK0ZBe1olp7drsCqEFPwOr1DCCsXxRh5SfQj6Edd47HvSZlV9SxmboBOuS14sthq9xtW4LsErqBhw/s400/GlassMagnets3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: justify;">FOUR - Take a pair of scissors and cut away the extra paper. Hold the scissors at an angle and cut as you turn the glass the full circle. You will likely be cutting through the excess dried glue as you go. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: justify;">FIVE - If you've used magazine clippings or lightweight paper for the background, glue on an extra piece of paper before super gluing the magnet to ensure the super glue will not show through.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br />
</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;">SIX - Apply super glue to the paper and affix a magnet. I use 3/4" ceramic magnets. They will dry within 15 - 20 minutes and you’re all done!</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><br />

Photo paper will not allow the glue to dry. Secondly, check to see and make note where the glass will need to be placed on the faces before going on to the glue stage. If a face ends up too close to the edge, it looks oddly distorted.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; text-align: justify;"><br />

I even happen to know some. Artistic photos can be so inspiring and when I know the person pictured, I can't help but love them all the more. These photos could be in just a simple black frame a still overflow with joy, but since they are so inspiring, I can't help but let the creativity continue with fun frames. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />
